How to get scouted
Talent alone rarely gets spotted. What gets athletes signed is being easy to find, easy to assess and easy to trust. Here is how to do all three.
1. Build a profile a scout can read in 30 seconds
Scouts open dozens of profiles a day. Yours needs position, age, height, current team and a short bio at the very top. Write the bio in plain sentences: where you play, what you do best, and what you are working on. Vague words like 'hard worker' tell a scout nothing — 'left-footed centre back, strong in the air, started 22 of 24 league games' tells them everything.
2. Keep your numbers current
A profile with stats from last season reads as abandoned. Match data, minutes played, and physical numbers should be updated after every fixture. Consistency matters more than one huge game — scouts look for a pattern across a season, not a highlight.
3. Film clips that actually get watched
Keep a highlight reel under three minutes and put your best 20 seconds first. Film from a raised, wide angle so your positioning is visible, and mark yourself clearly at the start of each clip. Include a full match too — scouts want to see what you do when the ball is nowhere near you.
4. Get verified
Anyone can claim a stat. Verified data — checked against match records by analysts — is what gives a scout the confidence to make a call. Ask your coach or club to confirm your match data, and keep your school or academy details accurate.
5. Reach out properly
A short, specific message beats a mass email. Name the club, say why you fit, and link to your profile rather than attaching files. Then follow up once — politely — and move on. Coaches remember athletes who make it easy to say yes.
6. Be findable
Scouts search by position, age group, region and sport. Make sure every one of those fields is filled in, keep your profile public or shareable, and put the link in your bio wherever you post. The easiest athlete to find is often the one who gets the trial.
